About Wellward China
Wellward China publishes plain-English information about hospital care in China for people who are considering treatment, a second opinion or a health check here. We are an independent information and coordination service. We are not a hospital, we do not employ the clinicians who treat you, and we do not make clinical decisions.
What we publish
Our library is built around four kinds of page, each written for a different question an international patient asks:
- Hospital profiles. Practical profiles of around 45 major public hospitals — what they are strong in, which campuses exist, how their international or VIP departments work, and what a first appointment involves. Browse the hospital directory.
- Health check-up and screening packages. Itemised package pages for most of those hospitals, listing what each package includes and an indicative price. See the health checkups guide.
- Condition and care-area guides. 24 guides that explain how care for a particular problem is organised in China and which hospitals are commonly considered. Start from all conditions.
- Research summaries. Plain-English summaries of studies and clinical developments published by Chinese hospitals and journals, with links to the original source so you can read the full account. See Resources.
We also maintain an English explainer for the Fudan hospital rankings, because they are the ranking most often quoted in China but least often explained.
Who we are not
- We are not a medical institution. We do not practise medicine, and we do not employ the doctors who would treat you.
- We are not a hospital's official representative unless a page expressly says so. Most hospitals we write about have not reviewed or endorsed their profile.
- We do not sell insurance and we are not an insurer.
- We are not an emergency service. In an emergency, call 120 for an ambulance in mainland China.
Independence and money
Hospital profiles are not paid placements. No hospital pays to be included in the directory, to be described in a particular way, or to appear before another hospital.
Where any commercial relationship exists — or if one starts in the future — we will say so on the affected page. We do not accept payment to change a factual description, a price, or a caveat.
Our coordination support, when a reader asks for it, is a separate service from our editorial content. A hospital we recommend for a case is chosen for the clinical question at hand; it is not chosen because of any arrangement we have.
Ordering, rankings and how we avoid misleading claims
We do not publish our own ranking of hospitals. When you see "No. 1" on this site it is because we are quoting a specific, named source, and the page says which one:
- A claim about specialty reputation refers to the Fudan hospital rankings specialty list, and we name it as the source.
- A claim about clinical volume — outpatient visits, surgeries, IVF cycles — refers to activity, not to reputation, and we label it as volume.
Reputation and volume are different measurements and can point to different hospitals. Mixing them is the most common way rankings get misquoted, so we keep them apart on purpose. See our editorial policy for the detail.
