About Peking Union Medical College Hospital

Founded in 1921 with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) is a major tertiary teaching and research hospital in Beijing. It is widely recognized in China for evaluating rare diseases, difficult diagnoses and complex conditions involving multiple organ systems. Its clinical services span a broad range of specialties, supported by medical education and research. PUMCH was ranked No. 1 in the National Tertiary Public Hospital Performance Evaluation. Its strong reputation across individual specialties is also reflected in the 2023 Fudan Specialty Reputation Rankings listed below. Rankings are one reference point and do not determine the best hospital or treatment for an individual patient.

A practical guide

When PUMCH May Be Worth Considering

These points can help guide your research; they do not determine whether a hospital or treatment is right for you. Clinical decisions are made by the hospital’s licensed doctors.

Practical guidance

Notes from Our Service Experience

The following reflects what we have learned while supporting international patients. Appointment arrangements, services and fees can vary; please confirm current details with the hospital.

01

Plan ahead for appointments

Based on our experience, appointments through the International Medical Department may become available about seven days in advance. If you plan to go independently, you may be able to book a few days ahead through the hospital’s official app or in person. The app does not offer an English interface, and registration counters may not have bilingual staff.

02

Consider whether the International Medical Department suits you

In our experience, foreign patients are generally not required to use an International Medical Department, though hospital policies may vary. Fees there are often substantially higher than at standard outpatient clinics. In return, it may offer dedicated consultation rooms, shorter waits, longer appointments and, in some cases, the ability to use international health insurance. For patients travelling alone, the additional support may make the visit easier.

03

A more cost-conscious route with coordination

For self-funded patients seeking a more economical option, we can help arrange care through the same channels used by local patients. Based on our experience, even after adding our coordination fee, the overall cost can be considerably lower than using the International Medical Department, while including advance appointment coordination, bilingual escort support and English medical reports.

Patient questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Peking Union Medical College Hospital on my own?

Yes. You can seek care at a hospital in China as a foreign patient. PUMCH is one of the country’s busiest hospitals, so getting an appointment without booking ahead can be difficult—even for local patients. Also make sure you can communicate effectively with hospital staff, or arrange language support.

Can I find out PUMCH’s prices in advance?

During a one-to-one consultation, we can share reference prices for some common services. These are for guidance only: hospital prices may change, and PUMCH has thousands of charge items that we cannot check one by one. If you contact the hospital directly, its official staff may be able to provide current price information in advance.

Are there better options than PUMCH?

There may be many suitable alternatives. For common, less complex conditions, we may not recommend PUMCH—and care may not need to be in Beijing. The right options depend on your condition, budget, preferred city and other needs.
